The animation on the left demonstrates
a great exercise if you're into that kind of thing. A fellow
guitarist showed me this years ago, and it really was a
breakthrough in my learning. The idea is this: pick a region
of the neck (higher up at first where the frets are closer)
and assign two frets to your middle fingers (shaded). Your
index finger is allowed to play the two frets indicated
and your pinky has its own fret. Now play your major scales,
each time going up a half step. In other words, if your
starting scale is C, then go to C#, D, D# etc., until you
arrive back at the original scale ALL WITH YOUR MIDDLE
FINGERS ANCHORED TO THOSE SAME FRETS. I have animated four
scales here, there are twelve in all.
This exercise stretches everything
tendons, ligaments, fingers, brain, knowledge, know-how and also should reveal to you that all scales are everywhere
at once on the fretboard. As you get better at it, start
moving down the neck (pitch-wise) where the frets get
further apart. Speed is irrelevant, smoothness paramount. |
